Our brick-red Stykka kitchen
It’s no secret that I—like many others today—“suffer from” that classic guilt and shame every time I swipe my card and find myself forced to buy something new. A new kitchen was therefore met with mixed feelings, but in our case, it was a necessary evil for our newly purchased 1962 deceased estate home. A demolition project in many people's eyes—a huge potential in ours—which was to frame our little family, which was just about to expand for the third time.
Our first thought was—naturally—to acquire a second-hand kitchen. A project that we quickly had to admit was far too time-consuming and difficult for us. We also deeply missed having a sounding board for aesthetics and layout, as we wanted to preserve the original look of our 60s/70s house that we had fallen in love with in the first place.
In the end, our choice fell on Stykka for three special reasons:
Sustainability and flexibility. Our Stykka kitchen allows us to keep the kitchen modules even if we choose to make significant changes to the kitchen layout at some point—for instance, as a result of an extension we dream of so the kids can get their own rooms. In our view, Stykka's modular system—where you get your own unique QR code—is a stroke of genius. It gives us hope that we have bought the foundation for our very last kitchen, even though we are people who love making changes to our home and have chosen to live in a house that calls for continuous transformation.
Sensory appeal. In our home, we have given careful thought to materials and colors. We spend a lot of time in the large kitchen-diner, and in a magazine, I once read that there is "evidence" showing our appetite is affected by the colors and materials surrounding us. White is out—in comes everything that rhymes with an edible color. It should be mentioned, though, that we were close to choosing the beige linoleum kitchen… right until our kitchen designer, Mikkel, saw our dark slatted wooden ceilings bordering the white drywall ceilings and walls that were to frame the new kitchen. We had to go with the brick-red linoleum kitchen (color code "brick"). And we haven't regretted it for a single moment, even though in the period leading up to installation, we suffered a bit of anxiety about becoming "the ones with the red kitchen."
Guidance and advice. Oh, how much competent guidance we received! For us, it was important to get as much storage as possible so lunchboxes, water bottles, pasta machines, stand mixers, and far too many plates could be stored accessibly without being seen. Our kitchen space limited us, but with a clever trick and 1 cm off our door frame, we managed to get both a coffee corner and a secret cabinet for the microwave. On top of that—contrary to recommendations—we decided to go with wall-mounted cabinets, which, besides great storage, tie the kitchen together through simplicity and provide good task lighting.
We are tremendously proud of our new kitchen and bold color choice, and in the long term, we dream of adding more Stykka solutions to our home. We send our warmest recommendations to anyone considering a Stykka kitchen.

Why we chose a Stykka kitchen
When we were about to move into our new house, we both agreed that the old kitchen had to be replaced. We did some online research and visited various kitchen showrooms, eventually settling on a kitchen from Designa Køkkener that seemed to meet our requirements. We had drawings and 3D models created—as one does—but felt the cost was quite steep.
We were satisfied with the choice, but not exactly thrilled.
We were actually ready to place the order when I happened to come across an ad from Stykka. It looked really stylish—and quite expensive—but I clicked on it anyway. It read: "Getting a great kitchen doesn't have to be expensive"—and I thought, "Let's see them prove that."
We got in touch with Mikkel, who—unlike the other salespeople we’d spoken to—was truly passionate about what he was selling. He was genuinely invested and cared about our kitchen as if it were his own. We discussed the possibilities back and forth and had a proposal drawn up.
Then came the exciting part: the price. It turned out to be slightly higher than the quote we’d received from Designa—something that surprised us.
But what did we get for that extra money? A truly well-built kitchen made from genuine, organic materials—real wood, not just glued sawdust—that has breathed new life into the house. The cabinet fronts are finished with linoleum, which feels completely different and more vibrant than a painted surface.
We now have a durable kitchen that brings life to the house and that we enjoy every single day—much like one appreciates a well-crafted piece of designer furniture.
